Meacham's Illustrated Historical Atlas of 1880 is one of the most referred to Atlases of Prince Edward Island. Most are familiar with its wonderful maps. But it is more than an atlas - it contains another often overlooked resource, it's Patron's Directory. This Directory may be compared to Hutchinson's, McAlpines, Lovell's and Teare's Directories, but contains several pieces of information not included in other directories that can be very useful - most notably, the nativity and 1date of settlement for many of those listed. The information will be presented in a finding database searchable by surname, town name, or by lot number.

The Portions for Charlottetown, Charlottetown Royalty, Summerside, and Georgetown & Royalty, Alberton, Souris, and all lots listed are complete and online. Lots 2, 45 & 46 are not listed in the original directory.

1 Dan MacDonald and Leonard Praught point out that the "Date of Settlement" referred to actually has multiple meanings, and the distinction between them is important to note:

  1. If the person was an emigrant, it referred to their date of arrival in PEI.
  2. If the person was born on PEI, it referred to their year of birth.
  3. In some cases, it referred to date of settlement in that area of P.E.I.

Dan gives two examples of this from the Summerside list.

1) J. A. Gourlie, Druggist, has a date of settlement of 1863. He was born on PEI and that is his year of birth (or very close to it - refer to his Gourlie file).

2) D. Rogers, Merchant, has a date of settlement of 1832, with nativity listed for Wales. He (David Rogers, actually) was born in Wales c. 1829-1830 and emigrated as a young child with his parents, from Wales to PEI, in 1832.

Please bear this in mind as you use this database.
